The Queen and the Spymaster is a wonderful and compelling read! A page turner. I didn't want to put it down. Rapoport's take on the traditional Esther story is truly imaginative and original, beautifully presenting romance, court intrigue, battle scenes, history and a cast of characters you want to kmnow more about. I was transported to Esther's time- walked the palace corridors, felt the breezes, fingered the textiles, heard the music and sensed the tension.

This book really took me by surprise. I started reading it thinking that I knew the basics of the story of Queen Esther and found that the narrative was taking me down unexplored paths with unexpected consequences. I am writing this with 80 pages left to read and I can hardly put it down. I love the intrigue along with the great writing.

A wonderful example of historical fiction based on the original Esther story, enhanced and enlivened with Midrashic lore and Biblical scholarship to create a spell-binding read.

I loved, loved, loved it! It was beautifully descriptive -- the clothes, the architecture, the characters' inner monologues. Really outstanding. The suspense drew me in from the first page. The scenes were cinema-ready. I couldn't put it down.

A little wordy at times. Makes sense, given the title. Im about 1/4 way through. Decided to take a break from it and read a novel or two. It seems to take for granted that the reader has a little bit of prior knowledge of all Jewish culture. Which I do not. It is a bit of work to get through at times. But, I do find some parts interesting. I bought it because I was interested in learning some of the Jewish words and phrases which I've run into in life and in the New York Times crossword puzzle.

I've not quite finished this book, so perhaps I am being unfair. Certainly, there is a possibility I will revise these remarks. However, right now I am saddened and disheartened that a work beginning with such promise - I imagined from the introduction and first chapter I would be listening in on a conversation between father and daughter - scintillating, intellectually rigorous, stuffed with literary ideas - each one of which would be its own adventure. Instead, after that marvelous first chapter I found myself swaddled in a thin disquisition on the roles of women in Hebrew text -forced into shape, the apology stretched as far as possible to cover the flaws in the subject, a great disappointment.I have no answer for these writers. I was hoping they would provide an answer for me. It seems there must be a better course than trying to puff up such comparatively meager material with air. The truth is the sages were not much interested in women, and the attention they get in in the Tanach is cursory at best. What texts there are, on the whole, don't dig deep, and some of our efforts to derive meaning for the twenty-first century are not rewarding. My own solution - admittedly not entirely satisfactory - is to regard these stories as primarily about human beings, with only tertiary consideration of gender - at least insofar as we attempt to apply the teaching. In terms of analysis and criticism I think it's best to simply tell the truth - this or that text dismisses the feminine perspective, and if we want to understand what is missing we have to supply it ourselves. I wish I had something more positive to say.

At first, I thought the book was great, attempting an intellectually honest look at Jewish scripture. But as I got deeper into the book the authors started showing clear anymosity towards Judaism, and their inability to be unbiased became really pronounced. The book is supposed to be about transmission of our heritage but the authors get fixated on the issue of women. Their analysis of women in Judaism makes absolutely no sense. They compare outspoken strong women of the tanach to the queit and subjuligated women of the Talmud. They completely missed the fact that the setting for talmudic discussion is in the Yeshiva, while the setting of most of the Tanach is on the street and in the house. Women did not hold rabbinic positions during times of tanach either. Whenever Talmud does bring down stories about women, they are congruent with the pattern of tanach, where the women are presented as strong, smart, vocal individuals.The authors never site the sources for the stories and ideas they quote from Jewish scripture. They twist the translation to suit their agenda, something that they accuse the sages of doing. As in case of'daat nashim kalos' does not reffer to intelligence, it rrffers to the fact that a woman can be convinced to change her mind easier. Daat is not chochno and not binah, for both of those the gemorah praises women.What really got me is the story of the wife's being footstools for their husbands when moshiach comes. I tried to find that story everywhere. I asked rabbi who knows all talked by heart where is this story, he looked for it, I asked different hassidic people if they ever heard of such a thing. I don't know where it's from, but it's not something from any classic scripture or commentary, or anything mainstream orthodox people ever heard of. Authors bring no source for it, creating an assumpy that it's some passage from a gemorah or medrash.Honestly, after I found out that the footstool story was not true, I didn't want to finish the book. There are real complaints we can bring up against the Talmud, and Jewish tradition, and we can have an open discussion about them. Writing about things that don't exist, and taking things out of context is not conducive to this.I feel real anymosity on this book towards Judaism, not based on rational, but based on personal issues.

As an atheist with some ties to my past, I like this book as it makes a tremendous amount of sense to me:it allows me more latitude and comfort in rejecting so much of what I grew up in and doing, and by making a choice to become a rabbi. Not that this is a sinecure. It still makes intellectual demands I am not ready to agree with completely. But the book has examples that ring true.

Because this book is by Amos and his daughter Fania (named after his mother) I connect so dearly to it. The two different energies that voice ancient story lines and words fascinates and ties together.

If you are interested in the process of writing this is a good book. I am not sure I always agree with her assessments of various writers--Oscar Wilde for example--but Gornick is thoughtful and probing. She speaks with knowledge and experience on one of the most slippery facets of writing: the narrator's voice. This may be one of the very best books on the subject.

It feels disrespectful to offer anything but praise for a book that captured the distance it takes to execute memoir pieces successfully. For writers wrangling with their personal material, trying to turn it into an engaging narrative that along the way may enlighten the reader, this is the premiere text. My purpose was to know what it took and this book describes the process with convincing clarity. What I did not enjoy about the book was its format. It was organized like a text with samples of mostly obscure memoirs and personal essays that the author then critiqued for you. Without having read those works in their original form I had only a cursory interest in her description of the content of those pieces and found myself reading hurriedly to get to the part about technique.When I purchased the book I knew nothing about it and mistakenly expected a discussion of memoir writing without frills. The book was more than that. Without a doubt, I think it is filled with essential information for aspiring memoir writers. If you happen to be an instructor yourself, there are questions you may find useful at the back of the book.

I've read many books on writing, but this is one of the best I've ever read for personal essay and memoir. Gornick really gets to the heart of what we who write from personal experience need to accomplish. It will make you go back and look - again - at your writing and see where you've missed or where you've succeeded. Highly recommend it.

Gornick's obsession is persona, the truth-seeking and truth-speaking narrator and how that partial, constructed self relates to the tale being told. When you try to apply her interesting principles to some works you like, especially if they are very scenic and narrative-driven, it will drive you crazy. Ditto if you are a writer trying to do what she says you should do. But it's fascinating. And she discusses some really interesting essays and memoirs, many of them uncommon or forgotten classics.

I bought this book because Vivian Gornick is an excellent nonfiction writer. It was recommended as a good critique of the process of writing informal personal essays and memoirs. Her discussion of what makes a good personal essay was excellent. How the essay and the memoir are different forms was cogent and insightful I highly recommend this book as one of several which can educate writers on how to go about writing personal, and experiential, pieces.

I have been a student at Stanford University for the last year and one of the teachers recommended this book to me. Reading it for the first time I had the feeling that Ms Gornick wrote it just for me. It was exactly what I needed. So many books about writing just talk about the writer's experiences but this one examines the genre of memoir writing like a doctor at an autopsy. What she writes gave me so many moments where I was saying to myself, yes, that is exactly it. And sometimes she writes things that explain a situation that I had not thought about and seeing it in print gave me that rare gift of true enlightenment

There is the situation, and there is the story, and if you can figure out the basics behind that seemingly innocuous statement, then you can figure out how to be a very effective memoir writer. Only about half of this book is about memoir writing, and I got it specifically for that portion. The essay portion, while fine, did little for me. I would definitely overall recommend this book.

This book was a mandatory read for my MFA - Non Fiction program. I am very happy that it was, because I gained a great deal of insight from reading it.I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about writing quality Non Fiction.

Unfortunely I started with a sample of the book thinking, I love time travel, and although she, the main charechter is absolutely brazen about touching precious property that doesn’t belong to her, I figured it was the inexplicable call to the past that made her behave so inappropriately for an adult. However after purchasing the book for $3, I realize what a waste of money. With the first few paragraph of her travel through time, her behavior is so immature I could not stand it. First it’s the same old inexplicable conclusion she arrives to, the thought that she is dreaming (sigh, not original). Her immature and childish responses that has little to do with time travel and more to do with her lack of etiquette truly annoyed me and I didn’t find it funny in the least. Even if she had not traveled in time, who answers that way to another adult. I was not amused but perhaps his book is more appropriate for a younger reader who may like that middle school behavior. Needless to say I stopped within chapter 3.

From the moment I began I fell in love with this book! Usually I am not as big a fan of time travel, but this book really did it for me. The author did such a great job in her characterization, I found myself laughing at many parts and tearing up at others.I loved loved LOVED our main character, Emma. She was spunky and fun and said exactly what she thought. I enjoyed her foray into the Regency era, where she did not quite fit in or know what to do. I loved how she was always true to herself -even after learning all the mannerisms and rules of etiquette, she never truly lost who she was or her quirky mannerisms.The romance between her and Hartley was so adorable. I loved how they quarreled and bantered back and forth. It was a clean romance, but with lots of swoon-worthy moments (my favorite kind).The author made it so easy to fall in love with the many characters in this book, and I ate up the pages in less than two days. I truly hope the author plans to write more books in this era. I have really enjoyed each book she has written!

Romance, clean, some sensuality, so PG-13This was a lighthearted read, didn't take itself too seriously, but still some clever writing. More of a 3.5 for me as a reader, but still a fun read. This was definitely pushing the limits for the time period with Emma's remarks and actions with people who mostly didn't know that she was from the future. It was a clever fall though, and the final ending with her friend and the great (several times over) grandson was very cute and fun way to tie up and work out the bits of the future that were left in the past. Emma and Hartley, their interactions and of course, their lovely, honest, and beautiful fall, were a beautiful romance. Their hesitations, but their obvious attraction for each other, read so well. I love S.W. novels, so this is another good read from a great author. Unique, fun, and clever romance.

I don't know what "Perhaps for a younger reader - middle school behavior" was reading/thinking, but I personally loved this story. After Emma Damon is invited by the Portwood Foundation to interview for a job in London (she gets the job and meets her best friend "Bex") Emma goes back in time to meet, eventually marry and start the Portwood family dynasty of wealthy and kind men who love the women they marry, I couldn't put the book down. There were funny, amusing and hilarious parts of this story and the characters in the family were down to earth, loving and the women were good witches for many generations. Emma teaches the Earl of Hartley to treat his servants as people and in the end when she has their first boy child, she realizes that having the baby gave her and Hartley more love and happily ever after than she thought possible at first. In the end, Bex finds out what happened to Emma when a mysterious box holding Emma's journals and a letter to Bex explained how Emma traveled back in time to become the Countess of Hartley and increase the family's wealth and most importantly, produce the great, great, great (and so on) grandson, Charlie Portwood VIII, the current Earl who will eventually marry Bex as Emma was matchmaking from the past for her best buddy Bex, who had sworn off bad relationships/men. I hope the author has more books in time travel planned.

I never write reviews but I had to write one for this book. Also I usually do not read Time-travel books, other than Outlander but this book was so funny. My husband could not understand why I was laughing so hard reading this book. It is well written and so dang funny I am checking to see if this author has anymore books along this vain. Highly recommend this book, also I love Regency romance books, so bonus with this book.

I haven't gotten teary-eyed in quite some time reading a romance novel but this one did it to me in spite of the silliness of some of our heroine's antics. The characters in this story are well developed and very likable. I enjoyed their humor and sorrows even though you knew how the story would end up there was some room to question the outcome. (hence the tears) Don't get hung up on authenticity and accuracy of the time period, that's not how to read this book. Just sit back, read and be entertained.

Once Upon a Time Travel is a beautifully written story of love and magic that you will never wish to leave. Emma is a smart independent young woman searching for her place in the world and finds it completely turned upside down after accidentally time traveling 200 years in the past. Hartley is a broken and serious man who believes that due to his past he will never find love and avoids it altogether and finds his calm structured world shaken by the outlandish newcomer who he finds fasinating and intriguing.This book has it all: history, romance, self discovery, and magic. I would recommend this to anyone who loves romance, comedy and adventure. This book will have to laughing aweing and wishing for more.
