Leadership Framed by Art does an outstanding job of illustrating the parallels between being a leader in the business world and being an artist in the creative world. At first I was skeptical about how the link between leadership and art could be made because these are two different career worlds. Then as I started to read the book, that link became clear in a way that I had not noticed before. Through the 4 main parts of the book: Inspiration, Vision, Motivation and Influence, the author discusses how leaders and artists must rely on similar characteristics, such as vision, creativity, fearlessness and passion to be successful in their chosen career path. These individuals do not achieve success overnight but rather must work hard at mastering the skills required to be at the top of their respective industries. At one point in the book, the author focuses on the skillset that leaders must posses and how those skills are found in some of the most notable artists. For example, there is a discussion regarding how leaders much examine the process like Monet did with his paintings. The discussion continues by pointing out that leaders need to be attentive to those around them like Warhol was with his work. A key element in the parallel between leaders and artists is that both must know when to walk away from an idea that isn't working, even when their heart and soul is invested in the project. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the business world that is looking to get ahead in their career!
Leadership Framed by Art is brief, easy and joyful read. It weaves together business and art to provide fresh insights about leadership. Visual ideas taken from artists such as Mondrian and Picasso are merged with examples taken from the work of leading businessmen such as Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson and many others. The author begins with the premise that the manager is a craftsman while the leader is an artist. Like many artists, the leader-artist needs to sketch the ideal self-portrait as a leader because the portrait of the leader reflects on the organization. Vision, values and self-confidence are all apparent in the leader׳s self-portrait and actually, much of what the leader does is a “self-portraitâ€. I recommend the book, it inspired me to think creatively about the journey to develop my leadership skills.
I am interested in both management and art. I was intrigued by the premise of the parallel between the two things I enjoy at work and during my spare time. Even though the logical arguments in the book did not convince me or how this could be useful, I thought it was interesting because it made me think about something I have not considered before. I was waffling between OK and Good rating, but decided on Good for the creativity of the premise.Ali Julia review
This book by Iris Lavy is inspiring and thought-provoking. Visual art is set as a backdrop for illustrating the close link between the “self portrait†of the leader and the performance of the organization—“the face of the leader is the face of the organizationâ€. The book includes chapters dealing with diverse topics such as managing change, conflict and innovation; as a woman, I especially enjoyed the chapter on women’s leadership.
As an Organizational Consultants we are always looking for new, original and refreshing metaphors that will enable new points of view for managers and leaders who want to improve their leadership skills and abilities. In this original and well written book Iris Lavy is giving us a new perspective, as well as new set of practical tools in the 4 areas of leadership: Inspiration, Vision, Motivation and Influence.Excellent book for leaders and managers, as well as for consultants and coaches who are looking for new, inspiring and empowering perspectives and tools.
I truly enjoyed reading this book!As an artist I was fascinated by the creative connections made by the author, who brings top examples on the importance of creativity, innovation and willingness to think outside the box for the post post modern leader.The choice of art in the book is obviously made by a person who has researched the art world as well as the business world making it thought evoking to read the connections between the two different but similar worlds.highly recommended for both aspiring leaders, managers and artists!
I really enjoyed this book. As a fairly new manager in my organization, I've been gobbling up books, articles, and podcasts about leadership and found this one to be unique in its perspective and takeaway lessons. I also fancy myself a creative and the intersection of both worlds, art and business, spoke to me on a personal level. I would recommend this book to quite a few friends!
In most cases, run-of-the-mill books on the topic of management fail to introduce new and substantive information. However, Ms. Iris Lavi's full title successfully shows how pioneering and visionary managers decisively change the realities of their respective fields. Ms. Lavi's writing is colorfully and powerfully evocative. I found the topic/the book fascinating, and I really couldn't put the book down! I strongly recommend Ms. Lavi's (title) for all those interested in a good and fun read.
