The aiuthor, Leonsrd Zane, has rescued the tales from the program, starting in the Fall of 1945 through the end of the program's serial run in 1949. Tis is particularly important, as the understanding of the character has previously been distorted over the decades.The book brings back into focus the character, as originally presented, as well as resurrecting stories that had hitherto become lost.The tales include science fictional elements, including disintegration rays and hidden lands with dinosaurs and cavemen, which were certainly credible as brosdcast, and are still entertaining.In bringing the stories back, the tales include a few faults as well as the many virtues. I grew up listening to Capt. Midnight starting in 1946 until the show left the air in 1949. So, to begin with, this book covers the exact period of Old Time Radio I fell in love with. I was a avid fan of the Capt. Midnight show in particular. I loved to decode the secret messages that ended many of the broadcasts but was upset one night when the secret message proclaimed that Capt. Midnight had died! Talk about your disturbed 9 year old! Although I remember a lot about the show, I am very foggy on the plot lines or specific adventures that were broadcast.Leonard Zane's book corrects all that and then some. Not only could I find the exact adventure and circumstances of the "Midnight Dead" event in my young life (it was during the adventure titled: "The Slave Smugglers" from 1947), but i was able to locate some other events in the run of the show as well. For instance, I remember the circumstances when the 1946 code-o-graph was offered and why. It's all in the book.Capt. Midnight even dropped an Atomic Bomb! Didn't remember that at all.The book does not cover the 1/2 hour, complete in one episode, adventures that concluded the Capt. Midnight broadcasts from late 1949, but these are considered by most affectionadoes of the show as outside the realm of the true Capt. Midnight adventures. Much like the television version of Capt. Midnight, they are just not in the same ball park.This is a terrific book for any fan of the Captain Midnight show!!!

“Christians are not bad people. They’re good people. Many of them have just been misinformed on this issue.”You could have easily categorized me as a misinformed, misdirected Christian. I grew up in a relatively conservative Christian environment. I was fed a lot of deception about gay and lesbians. I have been involved in a lot of debates concerning gay lifestyles and whether being gay is a choice or not. I have heard a vast array of arguments from both sides, and just like Justin Lee, none of these arguments are satisfying. Every argument for or against seemed incomplete to me.Justin Lee grew up in a solid Christian home with great parents, amazing friends, and strong church. However, there is one reality Justin could not shake; he was attracted to men and not women. He struggled constantly. What he believed and what he felt were polar opposites. He tried nearly everything but nothing worked. Unfortunately, most of his Christian friends did not greet him with simple compassion, they met him with Bible verses and condemnation. It is heartbreaking to read.What I love most about Justin’s story is his heart for Christians. He would probably say he was a Christian before he knew he was gay. He saw Christians as nice people who loved each other. He didn’t see them as a faceless mob protesting gays.Justin offers some great advice. One, we need compassion and grace. The life of Jesus is filled with grace towards others, especially the ones deemed outcasts by the social elites. Two, we need to educate Christians. Many Christians honestly believe they are doing the right thing by sharing Bibles verses of damnation because they do not want their gay friend to be separate from God’s love. However, if Christians spent more time listening and learning from others they can create a relationship with others and love people the way God loves people.If you are looking for an argument for or against gay and lesbians, you are not going to find it here. Justin admits that he does not even know what to believe theologically, however he does acknowledge that the entire narrative of the Scripture is to love like God loves. It is difficult to damn someone you love.“In the Bible, Truth and Love are two sides of the same coin. You can’t have one without the other.”

Such an outstanding, informative, brilliantly written book. I am in the exact position in my life as Justin Lee. I cannot say what a help this book has been to me in my "Tug of War" between my being a Lesbian and my Christianity. My book, YOUR STORY MATTERS (TELL IT) is my memoir of my fifty-five year relationship - a relationship lived in fear of being discovered and discriminated against. Finally, finally my partner and I came out in 2013 and were enthusiastically received by our straight friends, family and community. What a wonderful feeling. Recognition of our relationship was epic. Going forward, being proud, I returned to my church feeling I would receive the same acceptance. One Sunday the pastor noted that should the "gays" march outside the church, we should offer them water. In my head and heart I was saying ...."yes, that would be nice, but would you invite them in?" In another sermon it was noted..."The gay community has gained acceptance by banding together - this is what the church needs to do!" That old feeling of being a sinful, sick individual returned to me and out of frustration I approached the pastor. We had a private meeting at which time I tried to present my "side" of the story. At the time I was 72 and my partner was 82. Pastor agreed I had a problem. His position remains firm in the scriptures. His only suggestion for my troubled heart is to give it to the Lord and ask for direction.With the help of TORN I am writing down what I am experiencing. My book will be title, TUG OF WAR. I hope my words will be powered by my faith and prayers and open more eyes to acceptance of all God's children.

If you're reading this as a skeptic, then like ANY book of this topic, it will not impact you. This topic is so intensely polarized, that individual readers with the intent of criticizing are wasting their time. Lee's book is not an in-depth study in the theology of the topic - there are plenty of other offerings out there to dig in to. But Torn is a well-written, fun read that will make the interested reader think "wow - I never considered that" and "yeah- that traditional argument doesn't really make any sense". I gave the book to my college-aged son and it totally rocked his world - but because he was ready to receive the message. And now he's LGBT+ affirming. For those who subscribe to the paradigm of 'sola scriptura', don't waste your money. There are plenty of Gagnon and Dallas books here that will stroke your being-LGBT-can-be-prayed-away-and-they-must-be-forcibly-celibate sensibilities.

As Christians who identify as lesbian and bisexual respectively, this book has become our primary reference for loved ones who are struggling to understand how we justify our relationship in the eyes of God. Our hope is that more people will read this and develop a more integrated perspective.That said, there are statements about gays who are promiscuous in the book that are pretty harsh. It would have been more helpful for the author to clarify his perspective without so clearly differentiating himself from others who have had multiple partners.Still, this is the best book by far of any we have read for understanding the biblical view of gay relationships and how they fit into the church as a whole.We highly, highly, highly recommend this book and have given multiple copies as gifts.

I have had diabetes for quite a few years, but recently was promoted to insulin status. I have been searching for a single source of information that was both simple and yet included more technical details of what was going on.The book does a very credible job of both for many aspects of diabetes. As an example, it provides a description how insulin works at the body and cell level, the effects of exercise, diet, timing, lifestyle, and many of the other factors that affect blood glucose levels. The descriptions start at a high level (e.g. exercise uses glucose in the blood, so levels tend to drop) to a more theoretical discussion of insulin interacting at the cellular level within your body and how your liver and other organs react.The same type of treatment is also provided for other subjects, ranging form what to do when you are sick; sex and libido issues; diet; types of insulin; managing diabetes around sports, exercise, work, travel, stress, family, entertaining; interaction of factors; complications of high and low sugars; and a bunch more.In short, there are no doubt books which cover individual aspects of any part of diabetes with more detail and rigor, but if you want one book that does a very credible job on most of the topics, this is a good choice.PROS: Very readable. Well organized- individual topics are fairly well indexed and broken down by topic, and for each topic, the discussion breaks down how this might affect different portions of the population (e.g. Type1, Type2, Gestational). Seems to be written by people who both have actual experience as diabetics and real medical knowledge. Does not have the latest fads. Reasonably up-to-date A lot of info for less than $10CONS: My guess is that different sections are edited by different people, so the same information can be repeated multiple times. Still, it does serve to make each section self-contained. Some of the stuff is a little obvious- such as the tip to shop around for best prices on insulin. Still, my guess is that no matter how obvious, someone probably never thought of it. Sections on health care coverage are so general as to be useless I would have liked to see more references included for nerds like myself who would like to read more technical reference on the subject. Sure, you can go hunt for them, but the authors no doubt had them at their fingertips.SUMMARY: An outstanding value, lots of good info. I had confidence that the material was good information, not someone's opinion

I was hoping for a little more after care/diabetes management with this book but overall it's pretty comprehensive. It spends a lot of time explaining the disease which is great as an introduction to those new to diabetes. Overall, I'm glad I bought it and it's helpful.
