The Captain Midnight character originaled as an Old-Time Radio hero, and with the passing of nationwide radio-drama broadcasting, many programs weere lost to posterity. The aiuthor, Leonsrd Zane, has rescued the tales from the program, starting in the Fall of 1945 through the end of the program's serial run in 1949. Tis is particularly important, as the understanding of the character has previously been distorted over the decades.The book brings back into focus the character, as originally presented, as well as resurrecting stories that had hitherto become lost.The tales include science fictional elements, including disintegration rays and hidden lands with dinosaurs and cavemen, which were certainly credible as brosdcast, and are still entertaining.In bringing the stories back, the tales include a few faults as well as the many virtues. A couple of items in the stories are at wide variance with aviation practice, but only aircraft pilots are likely to be troubled by them. (This demonstrates that even scripwriters, even those who were pilots themselves, can occasionally make goofs.) Compared to other, more recent, "Captain Midnight" stories, though, such lapses are trivial, and rather technical.Mr. Zane includes appendices that cover such things as the premiums offered by the radio show, and one listing the surviving audio recordings of the radio serial.It cannot be overemphasized that Mr. Zane's book preserves stories that would otherwise be lost in the mists of time. I grew up listening to Capt. Midnight starting in 1946 until the show left the air in 1949. So, to begin with, this book covers the exact period of Old Time Radio I fell in love with. I was a avid fan of the Capt. Midnight show in particular. I loved to decode the secret messages that ended many of the broadcasts but was upset one night when the secret message proclaimed that Capt. Midnight had died! Talk about your disturbed 9 year old! Although I remember a lot about the show, I am very foggy on the plot lines or specific adventures that were broadcast.Leonard Zane's book corrects all that and then some. Not only could I find the exact adventure and circumstances of the "Midnight Dead" event in my young life (it was during the adventure titled: "The Slave Smugglers" from 1947), but i was able to locate some other events in the run of the show as well. For instance, I remember the circumstances when the 1946 code-o-graph was offered and why. It's all in the book.Capt. Midnight even dropped an Atomic Bomb! Didn't remember that at all.The book does not cover the 1/2 hour, complete in one episode, adventures that concluded the Capt. Midnight broadcasts from late 1949, but these are considered by most affectionadoes of the show as outside the realm of the true Capt. Midnight adventures. Much like the television version of Capt. Midnight, they are just not in the same ball park.This is a terrific book for any fan of the Captain Midnight show!!!
Largely because I was born too late, I missed Captain Midnight on radio. I did, however, become a great fan, squadron member, and Flight Commander, during the show's television years. Now, as an active Old Time Radio researcher and writer of technical/historical events I have fallen in love with the Captain Midnight radio show."Captain Midnight's Post-War Radio Years" by Leonard Zane is the definitive text for the program and its characters. Those of us who grew up with the Captain were not only shown that good triumphs over evil, but were assisted by our Captain in learning to be responsible citizens, building quality moral fiber, and developing the courage to go forward even in the face of adversity. The behind-the-scenes data in Zane's book, plus the sixteen riveting adventures, make this a page-turning, ` I'll cut the grass tomorrow,' kind of reading.Additionally, Zane has so skillfully woven fiction with fact that it becomes impossible, even for us seasoned squadron members, to separate one from another.
