(As a disclaimer, I have an advanced degree in signal processing and image analysis.) This appears to be a textbook for an advanced course in finance. I had hoped it was a book for investors who have an interest in programming and writing their own portfolio management software in R. Instead, it focuses on being a book that covers many of the advanced time series analysis methods used in financial modeling. That would be fine if the author had presented more examples of how the methods were applied to financial modeling and how the results were used. It would have been helpful to also have more comparisons of the pros and cons of the different methods.What I found lacking in this book was more description of the application of the methods described. The presentation is: here is a method for analyzing a time series and here is some R code (sometimes). It assumes that the reader already understands the derivation/origin of the method being presented from a signal processing/mathematics standpoint. The text does a poor job of explaining the role of each method in financial modeling. How would one apply a given technique and exactly for what purpose? So, the book seems to be written for that narrow audience who knows the derivation of the methods presented and knows the application as well. Equations are presented with a terse explanation of their parameters.Finally, the book cries out for a good editor. Dr. Tsay does not write clearly, unfortunately, and in many instances the syntax of the book is cumbersome, making the meaning difficult to discern.

This is a really, really dense and technical read, especially for a book that calls itself an "introduction". I'm a graduate student in analytics but have been unable to get anything out of this book because it is so high-level and filled with unreadable equations. I'd only recommend it for those who have a very advanced understanding of statistics and mathematics (calculus and beyond), since that seems to be the assumed baseline for readers.

Everything is explained fully. If you don't have a solid math background, don't bother trying to read it though.

I like it very much!

As the Russians say, "the veteran horse plows a straight but shallow furrow". The book's preface acknowledges an overlap with the earlier "Analysis of financial time series" (AFTS), pointing out the novelty of included examples. I would call "overlap" an understatement, and describe "Introduction to analysis of financial data with R" (IAFD) as a subset of AFTS, illustrated with examples, implemented in R. I may have wished for something fancier than the oh-so-nineties repertoire of ARIMA and GARCH - the marginal exceptions show up in the sections on ACD and EVT - but accept that the book is meant to be a textbook in a master's-level course. (Yet is priced at over $100! This made the choice between four and three stars easy). I am unimpressed with its usage of R: the ARMA/GARCH analyses are quite repetitive, the plotting is basic, data manipulation altogether absent, an early encouraging use of quantmod package does not develop at all. (If you visit the book's web page - and you will have to, to get the scripts that, for example, estimate GARCH flavors; in the book, it's just "source(..)" - you will count nine R packages used: fGarch, MASS, evir, quantreg, quantmod, TSA, fracdiff, fBasics, mnormt). The occasional typos - the amusing "Merry Lynch" has been caught in the errata, but others remain - add to the impression of a path-of-low-resistance approach. Even so, given the author's caliber, you get a useful, quality book. I would suggest taking a look at IAFD and the two books by David Ruppert, to see which one(s) you prefer.

The book is very terse and useful while introducing both, time series theory and R. It uses up to date packages that permit to analyze time series directly connected to updated time series from Internet sites (such as Yahoo!), which is very practical since all the resources are free. Actually, I got this book from a price error (almost 25 USD), which was pretty sweet for me!! Nevertheless, I think it is worth the usual price (< 100 USD). Read it!!

Good book...poorly executed.The author has gone great lengths to include mathematical rigor in the book but the code is staring at me as early as page 13!!Code R Demonstration with quantmod package on page 13 does not work.Someone has to spend a full day trying to figure out what the author left out..it's a painful experience.

very helpful book. A GI Symptom Assessment Tool is provided to help determine the severity of gut issues and which of the 3 dietary tracks described is most appropriate, given individual symptoms. I especially appreciate the contributions of Kathie Madonna Swift, who clearly lays out suggested menus, recipes and quick tips for each of the 3 diet tracks. Her suggestions include seasonal items so one can use the freshest ingredients. She also includes instructions for adding foods back into the diet after following the elimination phase. This is a very do-able program, thanks to her clear efforts. I provide individual nutrition counseling (MNT) and have successfully used the program provided in this book with individuals diagnosed with Chron's, Celiac Disease, and a variety of forms of IBD. Highly recommended!

This is a very helpful book with very well thought-out protocols to recover health through a proper diet. Similar to other Mullin books, provides lots of empirical evidence to support the recommendations. Karen also provides case studies and recipes in addition to nutritional advice. I will likely never go back to eating any of the sugary and processed food products of the past.

I started reading this book as a suggestion from my nutritionist. At the time, I was having stomach issues and I was on the low-fodmap diet. The only issue was that I found myself reducing the types of foods that I was eating to make myself feel better (eliminating the foods that still caused upset). I was down to oatmeal, hard-boiled eggs, corn tortillas and grilled chicken as my staples. It wasn't until I read Dr. Mullin's book and tried out Track II on the diet (the book contains three different tracks depending on how bad your intestinal issues are) that I felt much better. It seemed that having fresh, steamed vegetables gave me so much more energy. (If only I had listened to mom.) Further, I did not feel hungry (like I did on the low-fodmap diet).The best part about Dr. Mullin's book for me (beside all of the information about G.I. issues and solutions) is that the diet plans include actual diet menus. For example, it stated what to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, for seven days, on each of the three tracks, with both a spring/summer menu plan and a fall/winter menu plan for all three tracks, which helped me from feeling so overwhelmed when trying to decide what to eat. I just looked at his menu and ate it (and enjoyed it, especially breakfast on Day 2 of the Fall/Winter Menu Plan on Track II which featured autumn spiced soy yogurt parfait - delicious!).I highly recommend this book for those who want to feel good and healthy while they are in the process of figuring out what is going on with their gut!

My husband has Crohn's disease and I have read every book out there about digestion and nutrition. Even so, I have learned a great deal from Dr. Mullin. We are hopeful about trying his plan.Update:We went out to Johns Hopkins to see Dr. Mullin. My husband's Crohn's ended up being too severe to be helped with diet and supplements alone and so he just started Humira. Dr. Mullin and his assistant were very compassionate and worked hard to give us the best resources. We're now seeing a dietician who is affiliated with Kathie Swift. She practices functional medicine and feels confident he can eventually control his symptoms without medication. I feel like this book led us to the resources that will ultimately help my husband regain full health.

Excellent and very clear breakdown of three courses of nutrition which are determined by a symptomatic checklist. Recipes are included. Supplements for better digestion discussed, along with food allergies and how to limit toxins from the diet and environment. A thorough explanation as to how food is assimilated throughout the digestive tract is very enlightening. A worthwhile choice for anyone having digestive issues.

This book has been a great help with the menus and clear information about how to work with an elimination diet and reintroduce foods, as well as giving 3 different methods for dealing with digestive diseases and problems. It's been helping both me and my mother. Thanks.

About the Author

Ed Barr, best-selling author of Professional Sheet Metal Fabrication, teaches welding and sheet metal restoration in the Technology Department at McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas. Barr has been restoring cars and creating metal sculpture since he was a teenager. Barr graduated from the University of the South in 1991 and pursued a career in art museum administration after receiving an MA degree from the University of Kansas. Barr then served as director of the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Barr earned a BS degree in automotive restoration technology from McPherson College and subsequently worked at Vintage Restorations Ltd. in Union Bridge, Maryland, where he restored British cars. This is a very nice book! It is thick, has plenty of pictures, and goes through pretty much everything you will need to understand to get started with sheet metal fabrication. By getting started I mean it explains which tools you will need, and a few you should avoid. The Author talks in detail on how to use the tools. Now just so we are clear, you cannot become a metal master by reading a book. But this book is a good starting point and you will need to practice the techniques in the book. After some practice you can get pretty good at metal working, and for your needs that may be enough. I don't know what you are aiming for, maybe to make some rust repair panels, fabricate brackets, etc. Maybe you want to be able to create flawless body panels? If so, this book will get you started and then you probably need to progress on to other areas, books or hands on training, to get to the level you need. But either way, this book is a great start. I have learned quite a few things from books and from people skilled at metal work over the years. I still find myself wanting to learn more. That is why I picked up this book. There are a few books I have come across over the years where I was pretty disappointed due to the lack of detail in the book, but this one is much more thorough.I am quite satisfied with this book.

My first impression of this book was, "Wow! This is a lot thicker than I expected."I had not heard of Ed Barr prior to ordering the book, but I had heard of McPherson College, where he is an instructor. McPherson is a real-deal, four year accredited institution that offers several degrees in automotive restoration. This book contains the quality and depth of information that you would expect from someone that teaches in such a program.Professional Sheet Metal Fabrication contains a good balance of information on fabricating from scratch and restoration. Both hand shaping techniques and shaping with power tools are covered. There is a pretty thorough section on using a Dake power hammer, for example. The thing that I like about all of the "how to" sections is that they're clearly written by someone who is an expert sheet metal worker instead of a writer describing what they've seen someone else do. This really separates this book from several others that I own. In a lot of cases, he describes what can go wrong and how to fix it, which can be really helpful.The book is well illustrated with color photos, many of which show the work of the author's students. The author is also really good about citing the originator of particular techniques or tools, which is pretty refreshing.I recommend this book highly to anyone looking for a good reference on tools and techniques used in sheet metal shaping.

I was looking for a good text to review Kent's class and maybe pick up a few tips. This book exceeded my expectations. Ed Barr is well know as a metal worker and teacher. This book is well written and illustrated with good in focus pictures. Shows a good shop layout and covers the basics and advanced metal shaping techniques. I high recommend it.

This thing is like review notes of David Gardiner's "Learn the Art of Traditional Sheet Metalwork" (Which I can't recommend enough), but with personal insight. Instead of being able to show you via a video the author uses an array of adjectives, similes and examples for you to know how delicate or "ham fisted" to pound away. Not many technical book authors can explain detailed changes is pressure and directions and clear and simple to understand as this one can.Thinking of forming sheet metal (including complex curves) without an english wheel? Get this book. Thinking of forming with one? Still get it. The key is is easy as pie analogies of how metal flows that really make sure that you understand that this is simple work (you just have to be aware enough to recognize key areas and potential problems)

This book clearly shows, through excellent photography, and tells, with the author's knowledgeable, yet breezy style, how to fab complicated pieces out of metal. It make me want to go out to the garage and get busy. It does everything except put a hammer in your hand.

This book is chock-a-block full of tricks of the trade, tool hacks, detailed examples and explanations... If you're into metal forming you'll enjoy this book.

Packed with info & a lot of details. Great book for the novice & intermediate fabricator. Experienced people might give it a once over but not really needed for them.
