Please read the WHOLE book before you start, I was shocked that they did not talk about magnesium, potassium and added sodium until chapter 14! You could be 6 weeks into (a miserable) ketosis at that point! Other than that I liked the book but it may not be the best for beginners, I would start with Nora Gedgaudas Primal Fat Burner first, or Dr. Mercola's book which are more detailed I think, and recommend supplement dosages to help get through the beginning. Also this book recommends tracking your macros using various apps but I found the Cronometer app to be easier and you can set it for keto macros. I think the authors think that if you come from their 21 day paleo/ primal LCHF place you will not have difficulties transitioning to keto but from my experience of being primal very low carb high fat for years, I still had a hard transition.(Heavy legs going up stairs (fixed with potassium) diarrhea, low energy, basic keto flu) It took me 6 weeks of being in ketosis (checked by blood ketone monitor) before I felt like I could do my workouts again. I DID have to up my thyroid medication (even though most keto experts hate to discuss that this can happen) and I started from great sleep, primal exercise, LCHF, and a compressed eating window with the ability to do 24 hour fasts. It was hard but WORTH IT! Being a woman with low hormones ( Working with Dr. on raising estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) I still craved sugar even while in ketosis (1.5 mm on meter) but I love not being hungry, being able to go hours without eating and feeling no brain fog! I only mention all this because I don't want people to get discouraged and give up if it is harder than this book makes it seem! Where I think this book excels is transitioning high carb people to lchf and then ketosis and in the sections about athletes. Very worthwhile information! Oh! One more tip! There is a new (as of Sept.) blood ketone meter where the strips are much cheaper, Keto Mojo I think it's called. Testing your blood makes all the difference especially if you are having a hard time in the early days!
This is a great book for those who may already be a little familiar with keto or have tried it and "failed." For those who have never heard of keto before, they may want to pick up a little more information along the journey to help them fine tune their experience. However, you can absolutely start here (and should)!This book lays out a plan for how you are going to get from point A to point B - and it is possibly the most sensible plan I've ever seen. No, you don't have to crash into keto and experience horrible and sometimes downright scary side effects of dropping your carbs by the 100's of grams overnight. So many keto advocates promote the "all or nothing" approach. What Sisson offers here is a sustainable lifestyle. He teaches you how to gradually and safely enter ketosis, how to adapt, and then offers thoughts on where to go next to make this a whole life plan. That is how you are going to make keto work for you!Sisson's approach is one of a seasoned coach, which is surely what many readers are going to need to help them make that lasting change in their health. You leave this book with an action plan, including a test to know when to go full keto (so you have no doubt when you're ready), and the motivation to believe you can do it. There are two different meal plans inside and many fantastic, nutrient-dense recipes. Just looking at the recipes will squash any concern that you're going to suffer from lack of flavor or nutrition when you go keto.I'm not trying to take away from all the positives too much, but there were a couple of problems I did notice in the book. One, there were some inconsistent messages on how to execute the 21 day primal diet leading into the keto reset. For example, it mentioned no grains but then later suggests eating grains like wild rice. For those well versed in Sisson's primal diet, you will understand what this 21 day prep phase is supposed to look like, despite a couple of contradictions in this book. But, for those brand new to this concept, it might cause some confusion. Hopefully not enough to actually derail any progress.Also, and this is just my weird preference coming out here, I was surprised at the printing quality of the book. It does seem to be done on very cheap paper that was cut poorly. Of course, I don't hold this against the actual book, but I do wonder if there is something up with the publishing company for it to have a lesser quality construction. This is not the first book I've gotten recently out of Harmony that was cut so poorly, which I think does a disservice to the hard work authors put in to their books!That aside, I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is curious about keto and anyone who could be well served by trying it out.

Although it took me a while until I followed his advice, Mark Sisson was the first person who showed me the way in the right direction. Equipped with this book I can keep the momentum going and work on exercising better, getting enough sleep and reducing my stress levels.Update.: I originally wrote this book review on October 3, 2017 when I had already lost 30 pounds over a period of four months. Now ist is February 17, 2018. Since October I have lost another 10 pounds just by continuing with the Keto diet. I cannot say how much better I feel in my body right now. I am back to the weight that I had when I was 20. Besides the health benefits this gave me a great boost of confidence.
