I'm not very quick to praise something I've read. I've read articles and websites before, but most seem to either be extremely loosely covering the basics, or are so detail oriented its hard to figure out what to actually do about it. This book had a great viewpoint, not just covering how to negotiate a good car deal, but how to look and select unique combinations and car types to truly get a heck of deal. It also helps with selling and owning, two angles that don't seem to be covered as much elsewhere. Its clear they know what they are writing about.I really think this book helped me not just when I bought my last car, but the strategy and theory to car buying and owning will help my family with our automotive decisions in the future. So many things I had no idea about, and this really makes it easy, like what the true sales cycles are for different car types, how to buy online, in the store, or even remotely, where to sell dependent on the type and condition of the car, when to sell, and how some of the traditional rules of thumb are really deceiving. There was also some really cool things about how to actually make money when you buy or sell, and a handful of specific rules that really help make sense of the auto industry using real examples even from within the last year.Definitely worth the read even if you're not in the market to buy because it really takes the big picture approach of determining what to do to maintain the car value, choosing the right time to sell your old car, and then how to buy a new (or used) one.
I just finished reading this book, and I felt compelled to write a review. It was nothing short of amazing. I leased a car several years ago and to be brief, it wasn't the greatest experience in the world for me. So since then I made a commitment to myself to learn about the business side of before buying/leasing one. This book has exceeded my expectations, and every page is loaded with must-know information, whether you're a prospective buyer, seller, or just inquiring about car maintenance. The book is written very clearly and concisely. I now feel much more confident approaching a car dealer, and I suspect I'll get a better deal in the process. I recommend this book to anyone with the slightest curiosity about, well, the ins and outs of car buying and selling.
Fiesinger's book should be required as part of Driver Education. The principles he explains will be useful for all stages and phases of a driver's relationships with his rides. He radiates a passion and confidence for buying and selling cars of all kinds and ages, and he has learned the strategies for getting best value (and some awesome cars) by actually having done it himself.A good look into the mysterious world of buying and selling cars, written by one who knows how and has the ability to explain in a clear and entertaining way.
This book had everything I wanted. The language was easy to read and comprehend, but the theories were unique, well-presented, and detailed. A great mix of useful tips and detailed analysis.
excellant book. I felt fine in the purchase! Jin
The book was written at the tenth grade level with sometimes run on sentences and other grammatical errors. The content was informative however could have been presented or broken down in a more efficient manner.
This book is pretty good, and covers a lot of ground, and covers some topics uniquely that are glossed over in other books on the topic, such as the importance of leverage - because in the end all of the other techniques one reads about are really things that may help gain leverage in a transaction. That said, I wish that there had been a bit more about negotiation techniques, and how they may gain (or lose leverage), and how important it is to be professional to maintain leverage. There is some redundancy in the book here and there, but far less than in many shorter books, and quite a bit of it seems to be intentional, to cover cases where a reader may skip earlier material. The editing was quite good compared to other inexpensive books.I also really liked the section on car ownership and factors to help folks decide which minor repairs to make before trading a car / selling it on the market - a process I am going through right now. Some small beefs- The reason stocks pay dividends really has little to do with the time value of money, other than to potentially make them attractive in comparison with bonds - which really ARE all about the time value of money. Most often (though not always) stock dividends have to do with returning a portion of a companies *earnings* to shareholders.- I think it would have been good to point out that most dealer "add ons" (extended warranties, paint protection and the like) are negotiable (and that some, like nitrogen in tires are just scams). One does not have to pay the asking price for them any more than one should pay the asking price for the car itself.- In the chapter on leasing, I think it would have been good to have a couple of complete comparative analyses. My analysis of leases typically shows that they are fine values for folks who only keep cars 3-4 years, but for folks who keep cars 6 years or longer they cost as much as $100 to $150 per month more during the period analyzed.
