This review is not on the content. It's kind of hard to argue with Biblical truth. :) My review is based on the physical attributes of this Bible. The cover, while imitation leather, is still very sleek and durable. The binding seems solid and tightly stitched, which is good considering this was meant as a gift for my son to use for years to come. My main problems with it are that the pages are just a hair too thin. You can see the words bleed through just enough from the opposite page that it's visually annoying and distracting when you're trying to read. Also, for some strange reason, the verse numbers are NOT bolded within the chapter making it very difficult to easily find a particular chapter in a very long paragraph. I think I'm going to have to return this Bible or just buy a new one because I'm not sure if it's worth trying to make my son muscle through the shortcomings of this copy. :(

NRSV - The Catholic Gift Bible (Black, Imitation Leather)This little NRSV:CE is a great buy! I work as a hospital chaplain. I like to carry a copy of the scriptures around with me while I'm on the floor seeing patients. I had originally been carrying an old 1963 Confraternity Bible that I had rebound in an expensive leather cover. Unfortunately I was finding the Bible itself very cumbersome to carry all day, plus the alcohol hand sanitizers that I used as entered and left patient rooms was getting on the cover and drying on the leather, causing it to crack!I decided to get a Bible with a cover that could stand up to alcohol sanitizers and be lighter and easier to carry. I decided on this product after I saw a similar product in the store. In the store their wrapped in cellophane so I wasn't able to flip though the pages to check on text ink bleed through and readability, so I was reluctant. But after searching around and reading many of the other views I decided the price made it worth rolling the dice on. I was very pleasantly surprised! The cover is a black matte rubber. That many not sound all that stylish, and it certainly isn't going to pass as actual leather to anyone who looks at it twice, but it's sturdy and has a nice feel. And though it may not be real leather, it still has a nice "leather like" feel to it. And unlike real leather, this cover laughs at alcohol sanitizers attempts to deface it! Have used it now day in and day out for about a month and there's no signs of sanitizer having any effect on it. One annoying aspect is that the cover never seems to want to lay closed after you have laid out on a table open, tends to kind of "drift" back up. I sense that has something to do with the rubber not really being supple enough to hold its shape closed, and I don't sense that this is a problem that will be solved by breaking the bible in, but for me carrying it by hand or in a closed bag most of the time it isn't really an issue. The text is a nice 11 point font, slightly bigger the all the rest of my print bibles, though I wouldn't call it giant type or anything like that. Given the overall compact size of the Bible, I was impressed at the text size and readability though. The bleed through (the degree to which text on the opposite side of the page and following can be seen though the page) isn't too bad. I will note that it's more noticeable in the New Testament as opposed to the Old Testament. I won't say it isn't distracting sometimes, but again given how compact the Bible is and how inexpensive, I think it's pretty well controlled. The extras like the timeline, introductions, and study plans at the beginning of the Bible are more thorough and useful then I had originally anticipated, not at all like some of the pointless extras that a lot of other Catholic Bibles seem to feel compelled to shove in for some reason. I actually found myself referring back to those sections from time to time, which is something I typically loath to do with the extras in a lot of other Catholic Bibles. The footnotes within the Scriptures themselves are very sparse, mostly opaque translator notes that I suspect most casual Bible readers won't find particularly enlightening. Personally, I preferred this because I find even the most helpful notes somewhat distracting when trying to delve into the Scriptures, but others might prefer notes that are more clear. Finally, a word about the translation itself. These final comments have more to do with the NRSV translation in general and less to do with this particular edition of it. I had been curious to explore a Catholic translation utilizing the most recent Biblical scholarship and archaeological discoveries, and in that search all roads kept pointing to the NRSV:CE. I was also intrigued by the NRSV's claim to write in the most uptodate English idiom while still maintaining the dignity of the text. On the point of the dignified sound of the text, while still being modern, I'd say it mostly succeeds. But I have to confess that I found the aggressive use of inclusive language distracting, and honestly baffling in certain sections. I don't have a problem using a gender neutral pronoun when its clear from context that the author means to use a word like "man" in an inclusive sense. I even thought it was kind of cool when the text would substitute the word "mortal" for "man" in certain sections, almost seemed to give the text an even weightier feel if anything. But when they start using gender neutral pronouns when the text is referring to one distinct person, such as Ezekiel in his book, I think that starts to obscure the meaning of the text more than clarify. The breaking point for me was when I noticed, also in Ezekiel where the term "mortal" was being substituted for, "son of man," a favored title that our Lord Jesus Christ would often apply to himself in the Gospels. If you had only ever read this translation of the Bible, you probably would have no idea that Christ was referring back to the prophecies in Ezekiel and Daniel when He uses that title. And were more examples of things like that all over the text the more I read it. That kind of obscuring of the meaning of the text is pretty close to unforgivable in my book.So due to my own irritation with the translation style, I have had to limit my use of this particular Bible, which is a shame because for the price the product is fantastic! And if you don't have the same kind of hang ups around translation philosophy that I do, then I'd say you have no reason not to purchase this Bible right now!

I bought this bible to go with a confirmation gift. I like that it looks very "adult" and grown up, appropriate for a confirmation. My only complaint is that I found the pages to be very thin - almost like tissue paper. I might spend a bit more and get one with thicker pages that might hold up a bit better.

ProsConsidering what you get for the price, less than $12.00 USD: Unbelievable price! “Dirt cheap price, though not cheaply madeA book with a sewn binding that will lie flat on a table when open without having to hold it open. Being new, the binding is stiff, but will soften with use making it lie even flatter when opened to the front or rear 50 pages.Beautiful synthetic binding that that is sewn around the edges and doesn’t pick up stains from moisture on a table or podium due to the type of material it is made of. Also somewhat “grippy’” that resists sliding when placed on an angled surface.Reasonably large 10-11pt newspaper style (serif) fontFifteen pages of awesome monochrome maps that are clear and sharp, thus easy to read.“Beginning a Journey” by Harcourt Religious Publishers, that is over 100 pages long. Image of table of contents included in pictures. This is an awesome addition to this Bible. For even though not a ‘study bible,’ this is excellent spiritual material. Also has a short Concordance in the back, something rarely found in a Catholic Bible.ConsI purchased this edition of the Bible, as one of the reviewers referred to the nice easy to read font used in the printing of this volume. The font is an adequate size, but making it sans serif, and spacing the lines just a little further apart would have made it real easy to read.Very few footnotes, but not being a ‘study Bible, along with the fact that the RSV, and NRSV Bibles rarely have many, this isn’t a problem.

The NRSV is my personal favorite translation of the Bible into English. My only warning would be that Amazon doesn't do a good job of warning you this is an Anglican translation, meaning its in UK English not American English. The size is perect for study, without being so small it would effect the print font size.

Loulou & Yves: The Untold Story of Loulou de La Falaise and the House of Saint Laurent, by Christopher Petkanas

Review

"Loulou de La Falaise was “a cross between Holly Golightly and Sally Bowles,” in the words of André Leon Talley ― though you might also think of her as Cosette from “Les Misérables,” grown up to become the heroine of a Jackie Collins novel. A paragon of effortless glamour, Loulou twice married well (“I am not a gold digger or anything like that, but I usually do manage to get a castle. … My two husbands both have fabulous ones”) and, living a life brimming with sex, drugs and cosmopolitan éclat, charmed her way to the top of the international fashion order by becoming the longtime muse to Yves Saint Laurent, who imbued his designs with her turbans-and-tunics chic only to leave her with nothing.Petkanas opts for oral history, letting de La Falaise (who died in 2011) and her flashy circle tell her tale. What results is an affirmation of both the fashion industry as a pit of facile, well-accessorized vipers and the fascination that de La Falaise engendered, due not only to her role as haute gamine but to her indifference to the whole glittering shebang. The more she telegraphed that she didn’t care, the more they did. The book ― assembled from 153 original interviews, along with countless excerpts from letters, diary entries, articles and other ephemera ― takes the reader on a dizzying carousel ride around hundreds of boldface European names and the details of their louche lives in the ’70s and ’80s. Even for those not invested in the minutiae of the jet set, it’s a literary champagne cocktail that goes down easy as it sloshes from quote to quote, each one scandalous, wry, vicious, knowing or salacious, and often all five. Petkanas delivers a meticulous dissection of our endless fascination with the modish, bewitching women who refuse to let us in, and upon whom we project our fantasies, desires, even our hatred." ―Michael Callahan, The New York Times Book Review "... the high-fashion world of yesteryear... has been brought back to life in a compulsively readable oral history, Loulou & Yves: The Untold Story of Loulou de La Falaise and the House of Saint Laurent―though that tome likewise has some lessons we might all take on board... So what does it really mean to be a designer’s 'muse'? Read the book and find out."―Vanessa Friedman, The New York Times "The legendary LouLou de la Falaise and Thadee Klossowski... Paloma Picasso and Bianca Jagger... the late Pierre Berge and Yves Saint Laurent... Baronne Guy de Rothschild, social queen of Paris! Read all about these sacred monsters in Christopher Petkanas['s] LouLou and Yves. This book is an oral biography of Paris fashion between the glittering years when LouLou was the light between all the characters! It's a modern Balzac history! You will want to give the book and also read it. It soars! It roars! Petkanas has achieved in this book, a smash artistic hit... absorb[ing] you in the history of high fashion in the 70s."―André Leon Talley, fashion journalist and subject of the documentary "The World According to André" "Red-hot."―Fern Mallis, host of "Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis" at the 92nd Street Y, NYC "A must read!"―Sandra Bernhard, actress, comedian and host of Sandyland on SiriusXM"... at 495 pages, [Loulou & Yves] will no doubt prove essential reading for anyone fascinated with the Saint Laurent legend." ―Joelle Diderich, Women's Wear Daily "[Loulou & Yves] ruffles fancy feathers."―Richard Johnson, New York Post “Like all good biographies, Loulou & Yves… is a portrait of not just its subject… but of her place and time... The result is a crackling good read with a pleasing superabundance of salt, wit and dish; even the contributor bios are snarky.”―Nell Baram, Shelf Awareness, MainStreet BookEnds“For 30 years, [Loulou de La Falaise] helped Saint Laurent see things through rose-coloured glasses. A new book reveals why the troubled designer was drawn to his right-hand woman’s more-is-more style… As detailed in Christopher Petkanas’s… Loulou & Yves, De la Falaise was by Yves Saint Laurent’s side for 30 years."―Lauren Cochrane, The Guardian"From the book: 'On the theory that everyone loves a cocktail party, and because people with a drink in their hand tend to be candid, Loulou & Yves traces Loulou’s life chronologically through the memories of more than two hundred voices: husbands, lovers, extended family, friends, enemies, slightly less bitter detractors, colleagues, groupies, Yves, pundits, hangers-on and Grace Jones.' The good news is that you are all invited to eavesdrop on every morsel of information and tidbit of gossip that so many so freely offer at this 'party.'―Jeffrey Felner, New York Journal of Books

Lots of back biting and score-settling, an unflattering portrait of mostly trifling real and pretend aristocrats and their very junior high lunch table in and out crowd antics. Not a very in-depth bio of Loulou, unfortunately. To compare this to Jean Stein's and George Plimpton's Edie Sedgwick's book is a joke, the latter being a much better book. Who are all these "titled" Euros and why should we care about their bitchy and unfunny comments? Too bad, I was looking forward to reading more about Loulou and not happy about all the blather about her annoying mother, not interesting.

This book is absolutely mesmerizing and I loved it. You come away with enormous sympathy for Loulou. Her family history was fascinating too. Well-researched, beautifully compiled, lovely photos. My only issue was the unnecessarily bitchy, junior high school score settling the author indulged in, especially in the brief bios of the various participants at the end. The book would have been so much stronger without it-- it really diminishes what should have been a powerful work.

Fun book to read but too heavy to comfortably hold. Buy the kindle

I'm really enjoying reading all the quips in this book! And learning more about some of the characters I've only read about for years. One of the things I love about it, is that I can sit down for a few minutes, read a few pages and learn and enjoy.. It's not like getting tied up in a novel where its tough to stop in the middle of a chapter and pick it up later. Especially for those of us who remember reading about these characters who seemed to live such carefree, fashionable and exciting lives!!! It's really fun to read! Don't miss it!!!

if i was interested in fashion this book would/has killed it for ever

Wonderful time line

This is the strangest format for a book I've ever encountered. What was his editor thinking?? Trying to read this mess gives you vertigo.

What a fabulous book! I ordered several copies and even bought two more in addition to give out as presents to my fashion-loving friends and clients. I took quite a while to complete the book, because it was so dense and so filled with absorbing material that I kept re-reading passages and even whole chapters - ergo the delayed response and review. Now, I want to read it again. Get the book and ENJOY! Congratulations, Christopher Petkanas, on a superb job of assembling all the material from the many, many interviews you conducted for writing a fascinating study of an important, mostly unrecognized for HOW important, figure in the history of 20th century design, Loulou de La Falaise.
